Becca swimwear to the help of wounded soldiers

Swimwear designer Rebecca Virtue is pleased to announce her collaboration with Furnishing Hope to help provide much needed support to our Wounded Warriors and their families. Severely wounded warriors are immediately sent to military hospitals specializing in amputee and traumatic brain injuries.

The spouses and children of these warriors fly across the country to meet them, often times leaving all their possessions behind. Many of these family members arrive with only a suitcase. When their loved ones are released from the hospital to begin their rehabilitation process, these supportive family members seek housing nearby. Furnishing Hope provides the necessary furniture and supplies for these displaced military families to create a more comfortable environment in which they can recover from their injuries and start a new life.

Beth Phillips is the founder and executive director of Furnishing Hope. Having been an interior designer for more than thirty years, Beth saw the unnecessary disposal of usable furniture as an opportunity to do something for those in need.

For many years, Beth's daughter, Rebecca Virtue, has participated in Furnishing Hope's efforts. Rebecca saw firsthand how the creation of a nurturing home could impact the lives of military families in need. She saw an opportunity to partner the worlds of interior design and fashion design to make a difference.

Rebecca Virtue designed a collection of Red, White, and Blue swimwear and cover-ups in honor of these men and women who have given so much for our country. 15% of BECCA's net proceeds from the sales of this collection are being donated to Furnishing Hope to help further their efforts.

Sassy reveals their expansion into adaptive clothing

Sassy Scrubs, based in Upstate New York, manufacturer of custom medical scrubs, hospital uniforms and chef’s clothing, announces the latest expansion to their product line. Sassy Scrubs is branching out into the field of adaptive clothing due of the ability of their company to custom make easy-to-wear, non-constrictive garments for people with disabilities, limb differences, and dressing challenges.

Having discovered the difficulties encountered by adults and children with special needs when it comes to locating a fashionable source of clothing, the scrubs company offers a truly unique service. They create adaptive clothing for those with very specific challenges by creating specialized garments which can be customized to fit individual needs.

The uniform manufacturer and e-tailer creates individually ordered garments with special features. Scrub shirts are available with hook and loop closures at the shoulders, soft back openings for ease of dressing and comfort, and in sizes up to 6-XL. Scrubs pants are made with differing leg inseams and wider legs to accommodate leg braces and limb differences.

Other options available are long sleeved scrub tops and jackets with differing sleeve lengths. Sassy Scrubs’ special needs customers have enjoyed saving money on custom made garments, especially in comparison to purchasing standard off-the-rack garments and then needing costly alterations; not to mention enduring extended waits for custom alteration services.

Belgian Raf Simons to be new head designer at Dior

Raf Simons, the 44-year-old Belgian designer who worked at Jil Sander for seven years, will take over as the head of design at Dior, the French retailer of high-fashion apparel and accessories.

Simons, who will be titled artistic director of haute couture, women's ready-to-wear and accessories collections, will showcase his first creations for Dior at the Paris Couture Week in July.

Dior’s head designer John Galliano was ousted from his position last year, after he made anti-Semitic comments, and since then a haunt was on to find a replacement.

The creations by Bill Gaytten, who temporarily filled the position, were not well-received by fashion critics.

On his new job, Simons said it is one of the ultimate challenges to work at a place like Dior, known for luxury, femininity and elegance.

Countdown begins for Islands of the World Fashion Showcase

The much anticipated return of Islands of the World Fashion Showcase (IWFS) is just over one month away and the organizers are extremely excited about the event. The newly rebranded showcase is set to take place May 11-12, 2012 at the Sheraton Nassau Beach Resort.

After a one-year hiatus, IWFS is ready to re-launch to the public, international press and fashion trade with an opening act that will arguably rival the Victoria Secret Fashion Show and highlight local musical talent.

Ten designers representing five countries will take part in the Showcase's May edition. They include Chelsea Johnson, Courtney McIntosh, David Rolle, Harl Taylor Bag, Latoya Hanna-Moxey and Theo Sealy all hailing from The Bahamas, Carol Fraser representing Guyana, Sharleen Logan from St. Lucia, Kimon Baptiste of St. Vincent and The Grenadines and Darcel de Vlugt from Trinidad & Tobago.

The showcase will also highlight the designs of the participants of the newly created Jackson Burnside III Fashion & Design presentation.

Indira Moss, IWFS production manager said she is excited about the showcase and hopes to bring attention to the event streamlining itself with the 'global fashion clock'.

"It's our hope to take IWFS to the next level in fashion and the first step is to align the showcase with the industry itself," she said. "By hosting two shows each year it gives designers the opportunity to get their designs and products on the market in a timely fashion. By putting the show on this track, we are ensuring that each designer will get the maximum exposure they need to properly produce for a potentially wider market."

Riding off a successful 2010 season, which was aired in a 30-minute segment in Florida, New York and the Caribbean, the newly rebranded event is poised to widen its international market with a one-hour television show to be aired in August on international networks throughout the United States, Canada, the Caribbean and Australia. This expansion comes courtesy of a newly formed collaboration of IWFS with Creative Entertainment Management (CEM) out of Los Angeles, California.

Natalie Wood and Judy Jetson - Katy Perry’s Fashion Icons?

Katy Perry‘s sartorial selections run the gamut from the sublime to the slimed — and the singer likes it that way, thank you very much.

“I don’t like to take fashion too seriously,” she tells Teen Vogue. “I love it, and I am so grateful when big brands want to associate with me, but mostly I just want to take chances and have fun and truly live. Sometimes that means wearing some ridiculous, cat-inspired outfit rather than whatever happens to be in this season.”

Calling Agyness Deyn, Chloë Sevigny, Daphne Guinness, Natalie Wood, Judy Jetson and Wonder Woman her fashion icons, Perry says she singles them out for their personal style and strength. “They have the ability to adapt and evolve and change,” she shares. “Like, I’m still doing the pinup thing, but now when I do it, I want to be the pinup of the future, like Rachael in Blade Runner.”

There’s a reason for her eclectic sense of style, too; one that stems from childhood. “When I was 9 years old, my father used to wake me up at seven every Saturday morning to take me to garage sales,” Perry explains. “I couldn’t afford the clothes that the other girls at school were wearing, so instead I looked for things that were unique to me.”
